It wasn’t until I moved to Arizona (throwback to 2012) that I was introduced to this incredible concept of a “staycation” and now I’m obsessed. Truthfully, I feel like I’ve gone on more staycations than vacations! Just a few weeks ago I stayed at the Hotel Palomar in Downtown Phoenix with three of my favorite blogger babes Neyda, Kat and Allyssa. We only spent one night there but it felt like a weekend long getaway, which made me realize…staycations might just be better than vacations (gasp.) Before you write me off as being completely out of my mind, hear me out. I’ve got 9 reasons why your next vacation should be a staycation! Let’s go!
#1 Less Traveling More Vacationing
The best part about a staycation is not having to drive or fly long distances! Not only are you saving money but the time you’d spend at the airport/car is spent at the resort instead. More time vacationing means less time you have to take off work (major plus, if you’re saving up those PTO days). I don’t know about you, but having to travel hours home after a weekend getaway almost cancels out the time you spent relaxing…there’s no better feeling than a quick 20 minute drive home, leaving you more time for that post vacation relaxation!
#2 Less Planning and Packing
One of the biggest advantages to taking a staycation is it can be last minute! No flights to book, just pack a bag and go. And a major plus when it comes to packing for a staycation is already knowing what the weather is like. It’s the perfect occasion to get dolled up and wear your favorite new outfits (also an excuse to go shopping). Another added benefit, if you happen to forget something, you’re close enough to home you can head back and grab it! That’s what I like to call a win-win-win!
#3 Food for Days
Vacations are meant for the food aren’t they? Trying new restaurants is the best and resorts always have the best food! Think about it, people travel from all over to come stay in your city so the food HAS to be good! Case and point, I had never tried Southern Comfort cuisine and now it’s a new fav. When we stayed at the Palomar, we ate at Blue Hound Kitchen and OMG. I’m surprised they didn’t have to roll us out of there. From the shrimp and grits to the fried green tomatoes and scallops…we basically tried everything on the menu (cocktails are taste bud approved too). When
in Rome on staycation right?!
#4 Major Pool Goals
What’s a vacation without a pool? Whether it’s a rooftop or indoor pool, one with waterslides or a lazy river…resorts know how to do it right! No more community pool on the weekends, upgrade that pool day and hit up your local resort, you won’t regret it!
#5 Five Star Service
Near or far, hotel service is what dreams are made of! Unless you’re wearing a sign, the hotel staff doesn’t know you didn’t travel miles to stay there and they’re all about creating a five-star experience for everyone! Resorts are so thoughtful when it comes to special occasions, for our blogger staycation the Palomar staff stocked our room with face masks, desserts and champagne aka all the necessities for a girl’s night in (can you say spoiled?!).
#6 The More the Merrier
Getting friends together for a weekend getaway can be challenging, there’s schedules to coordinate and costs to calculate. Staying in town makes it easier on everyone! A quick overnight staycation is so much more doable than getting everyone out of town. And even if your friends can’t stay overnight, invite them to stop by for a pool day or dinner! After all, they’re just down the street amirite?!
#7 Become a Tourist in Your Own City
There’s something about staying at hotel that let’s you see a city in a different way. I only live 20 minutes from Downtown Phoenix yet I’ve never really gotten to explore it until I spent a night at the Palomar. Pick a place you haven’t explored and asked the concierge for a few recommendations, you’re guaranteed to discover some local hotspots you never knew!
#8 Save Money
Aside from saving money on travel, you’re saving time (time=money)! Also, local resorts offer up staycation deals all the time! Just check on their website or give them a quick call and ask for last minute deals. Another trick I love to use is the “Hot Rate Hotels” feature on Hotwire. It gives a room for cheaper if you book before learning the name of the hotel, but you can usually figure out which hotel it is by the disclosed location and resort fee.
Every staycation I’ve had has felt like I left town. Resorts have a way of letting you unplug and escape reality for a few days. I don’t know if it’s the fluffy pillows, gorgeous views, enormous bathtubs, free travel size lotions or the room service (maybe all of the above). But not having to make my bed every day is vacation enough for me, everything else is just an added perk, I come back relax and recharged every time!
So before you plan your next vacation consider a staycation, especially if you’ve never tried one! And if you need more convincing or any hotel recommendations feel free to message me on instagram or comment below.
