We’ve all been there. You see the cutest pair of booties only to take a look at the price tag and start an internal battle of deciding whether or not you should spend that much money.
Trust me I get it. I want all the things, all the time! Which is why I’ve become pretty resourceful when it comes to finding a bargain (I mean who doesn’t love a good deal). But I’ve also started spending a little more on certain things…learning along the way what was worth the splurge and what was just a total impulse buy.
Everyone knows the lifelong lesson of want vs. need. But let’s be real. Sometimes we just really want something and convince ourselves we need it. I think it’s all about making a logical assessment and if you can successfully justify splurging on something you want, then by all means, treat yo self! Here’s 6 questions you should ask yourself to help you decide if something is worth the splurge!
What Can I Wear This With?
This is first question you should ask yourself when buying ANYTHING, let alone something that is potentially 1/4 of your paycheck! Items that can be used over and over again are definitely higher in value. How many things can you pair it with? If something can only be worn with a dress or with certain colors, you should rethink the splurge. Can you wear it across multiple seasons, like from summer into fall? Or for different occasions like New Years and then for your birthday? The best things I’ve bought are the ones that I can dress up or down, pair with neutrals or different colors, transition across seasons or are so comfortable I want to wear them all the time, like my Vince Camuto shoes I wear with EVERYTHING (which happen to be 40% off right now). Make sure you’re getting your money’s worth by buying something that will be used time and time again!
Where Can I Wear This?
Admit it, we all have that polka dot crop dot hanging in our closet waiting for the perfect “Girl’s Night Out…in Vegas…when I get my 6-pack”. Or that “BYU Sucks” shirt you can only wear when the Utah Utes play BYU….(sorry I had to throw that in there…Go Utes!). If there are only specific events or places you can wear something, then chances are you’re better off heading to Forever21 in search of a cheaper option.
Consider comfort too! Are those 6 inch heels really going to get you through wedding season as you’re sinking into the lawn of every reception or how long until you take them off at the club because your feet hurt? Think of it in terms of; If this…then that. If I can wear it to church then I could also wear it at work or if I can wear it at this club I can wear it at that pool party”. Channel your inner Kate Middleton and splurge on pieces that you can keep recycling!
Is it Just a Trend?
Remember those jeans with bedazzled back pockets that basically cost an arm and a leg at Buckle? Who is still wearing those? (no judgement if you are) Trends come and go which is why stores like Target, H&M, Forever21 are currently filling their shelves with chokers because they’re hoping to cash in on the hype by offering a cheaper option. There’s nothing wrong with joining in on the latest trend but even though some last longer than others, they eventually fade out. Here’s my rule of thumb:
Splurge on the classics. Scimp on the trends.
What is the Lifetime Guarantee?
If you realize this is something you’re going to be using so often that you need it to hold up, then splurge! Sometimes to cost is worth the quality. For example, I bought a Michael Kors black tote 3 years ago. I kid you not, I have used it for work every day, 5 days a week…stuffed my laptop into it, carrying other bulky unnecessary items in there and it is only just now starting to show some wear on the straps. Had I bought a black bag of lesser quality, I would have gone through 4 or more bags. To me, it was worth the extra splurge. But not everything you use often needs to be expensive. Think of a white T-shirt, another item you could wear almost every day. The amount of times that it is washed and dryed, plus when you factor in those nasty yellow pit stains…the wear and tear is inevitable. Sure, a more expensive white tee might buy you a few more months but something that needs to be replaced often can fall into the save category.
Can I Find it for Less?
Like I said, I’m all about a good deal so if I think I can find it for cheaper somewhere else, I’ll do it. It’s like the classic story about my H&M dress where it was half the price online as it was in store. All I did was a little extra research. Check your email or the store’s site to see if they have a recent coupon code, often times they’ll have codes for shopping online only. In that case, it is often cheaper wait a few extra days and order it online. I also like to use Shopstyle.com to see if something is available in other stores or find some similar for less. The best part of using ShopStyle is that you can set up alerts to be notified when your favorite splurge pieces go on sale! There’s nothing better than getting what you want for less than you thought!
Is This a Temporary High?
So you’ve successfully answered the questions above, this should be a no-brainer. Buying something new is always thrilling but how long will that “shopping high” last? Ask yourself, is this something I’ve been wanting for a while or just an impulse buy? I once bought an expensive pair of lip stick because it was technically on sale…yet still considered a splurge for a lip stick…but it was this bright color and I had this desire to change up my look, be more “trendy” or “edgy”. So I bought it, wore it once and haven’t touched it since. When you buy something you truly want and/or need, then each time you use it or put it on, you’ll remember that it was worth it. My friend had been waiting 3 years to buy a Louboutin bag, each time she got a bonus she contemplated making the splurge but each time waited until she knew it was something she truly wanted and would value for a long time, she wears that bag every where she goes now.
