As if Snapchat hasn’t done enough by giving us a puppy dog filter, now they’re letting us create our own geofilters! You know, those specially designed filters that show up based on your location…now we can pick any place in the world and upload our own custom one for however long we want! So yes, if you want your bestie bachelorette to have her own snapchat filter, you can make it happen!
Ok I know you’re thinking how do I do this, how much is this and how the freak do I create one?! Don’t worry, I’ve got 3 different options for designing your geofilter and I’ll walk you through the details of the uploading process (I promise it’s easy) Here we go!
STEP 1: Design Your GeoFilter
Buy a Design
The quickest and easiest way to design a geofilter would be to buy a custom made one! Etsy has plenty to choose from. For my friend Atash’s bachelorette party I had two geofilters made by Poppy Paper Studios (which they got to me in 24hrs). I chose one that was pre-made and customized with the bride’s name and bachelorette party location. Then they also created a completely custom design around our “Seattle” theme! Look how cute the space needle is with the little diamond on top, this girl is seriously so talented!! If you’re looking for a geofilter check out Brittany’s Etsy shop, all her designs are super affordable and so cute!
Design Your Own
If you want to get your “creative” on then there’s two ways to design your own geofilter!
1. Via Snapchat
When you go to geofilters.snapchat.com you have the option to design a geofilter using Snapchat’s templates and tools. You just pick your occasion…
And then choose a template to customize! It’s super easy and all in one place. Once you’re done designing you just click next to set up the time and location of your filter (we’ll dive into those details below).
2. From Scratch
If you really want to channel your inner designer then you should create a geofilter from scratch in either Canva or Photoshop. This will let you be very detailed and create the exact design you want. Your image will need to be 1080px wide by 1920px high, saved as a .PNG file with a transparent background and be under 300KB in size (if your snapchat geofilter file is too big, I recommend using, TinyPNG.com, to compress it).
If you’re no photoshop expert (like me) but still want to create your own, Canva is a great option! I used it to create filters for a bridal shower and did it just by Googling transparent images that I wanted (for example, “champagne glass icon transparent”). The only catch is that in order to download your image with a transparent background, you need a the upgraded version of canva, but they do have a 30 day free trial!
STEP 2: Uploading Your Geofilter
So now that you have your geofilter design, it’s time to send it to Snapchat! Go to geofilters.snapchat.com, login into your snapchat (good luck remembering that password) and then choose if you’d like to upload your own design or create a design online with Snapchat’s tools.
Once you’ve uploaded your design, it’s time to pick the date range you want it to be available! You can schedule a snapchat geofilter up to 3 hours prior to the time you want it to go live. So if you need it to go live today at 6pm, you need to submit your filter no later than 3pm today.
Now pick your location! You can choose anywhere in the world. Just draw a fence around the area you want the filter to be available, you can adjust it as you go. Obviously, the larger the area and the longer the time, the higher the price will be which you can see in the top right corner. The lowest price I’ve seen for a filter is $5 for about 1-3 hours.
And last but not least you’ll need to select what type of filter it is, person or business.
- A Personal Geofilter is one that doesn’t include any branding, business marks/names, or logos, and doesn’t promote a business or a brand. You might submit a Personal Geofilter to celebrate a birthday or graduation, for example.
- A Business Geofilter is one that promotes a business or a brand, and it will need to meet the Business guidelines set forth below.
Once you’ve selected that and entered your payment information, click submit! Snapchat will send you a confirmation email to let you know your submission has been approved and then an another email once your filter goes live and when it ends. The coolest part is that you can log back in and see analytics for each of your filters. Just go to your name on the top right of the screen and select “my geofilters”. It will show you all your purchases, their location, duration, how many times it was used and how many people saw the filter! Here’s the recap of the Seattle filter I scheduled at Pike Place Market (told you, you can pick anywhere in the world).
And there you have it! Now you can go create as many geofilters as your little heart desires! Use them for any occasion; graduation, baby shower, holiday parties, asking to prom, marriage proposals, girls weekend, bachelorette, weddings, seriously EVERYTHING! Get creative and while you’re doing that, add me on snapchat so you can send me the amazing filters you create!!
Huge shout-out again to Brittany at Poppy Paper Studios for creating the most amazing custom filters for my friend’s bachelorette, it made it that much more special and fun!
