We have all set goals or New Year’s resolutions, only to break them months or even days later. So what gives? Why can’t achieving goals be as simple as saying them outloud? Well…because that would be too easy wouldn’t it? And what’s the fun in that?
Let’s face it. We’re all human. Instead of choosing to do something that will bring us closer to achieving our goal we’re most likely going to be tempted by that late night Mcdonald’s drive thru run, give into our fears, impulsively spend our paychecks online shopping or watch that extra Netflix episode (guilty).
|| Remember Why ||
There’s a reason you made a goal in the first place, right? What was your original motivation? Going back to why you started can be a great reminder for why you should keep going. But what if you can’t remember why you chose your goal? Then it may be time to rethink your commitment. If you’re not motivated for the right reasons (bachelor reference anyone?) then it will be a helluva lot harder to stick to your goal.
|| Believe It ||
If you don’t believe that you can achieve the goal you’ve set, then you’ve already failed. It’s all mental isn’t it? Envision yourself reaching your goal…how does it feel…what does life look like? Remember, believing is the first step to achieving.
|| Break Bad Habits ||
I know what you’re thinking…“Duh. That’s obvious.” But old habits die hard and it can be rough trying to achieve if you keep falling into old routines. Identify that bad habit that is keeping your from your goal and avoid it. For me, if I come home after work and immediately start watching a show, I’m done for the night and there’s no way I’m getting anything else done. So when I know I need to do something, I’ll do that before I go anywhere near my couch! Replace the old with the new!
|| Make A Plan ||
A goal without a plan is just a goal. Plan out how you are going to achieve your goals, any obstacles you may run into and be as specific as possible when it comes to details and how quickly you want to reach your goal. Using the SMART goal technique will help!
|| Check In ||
It’s easy to say “I want to drink water every day” and it’s even easier to forget to. Create a daily or even monthly check in for yourself to see where you’re at and if you’re on track. Set a reminder in your phone or use your planner/journal. I love the Panda Planner because it has end of day/week/month reviews where you can list your wins or ways you plan to improve.
|| Share Your Goals ||
If you say it, it makes it real. Talk about your goals with your friends, family, on Snapchat, anywhere! Just put it out there so you can feel a sense of accountability.
|| Keep It In Sight ||
Don’t just keep your goals tucked away in your journal, there’s a reason there’s the saying “out of sight, out of mind”. I’m a big believer in having a visual reminder of your goals or things you want. It can be as simple as a post it note on your fridge or if you’re feeling crafty make yourself a vision board!
|| Dream Small ||
It’s ok to start small. You don’t always have to set a goal that is crazy-reach for the moon-impossible. Set smaller, attainable goals, you can always work your way up.
